Here are Coach Metzinger’s comments:
“We faced some good competition on saturday. We traveled light only carrying 6 wrestlers to compete. Numbers has a lot to do with point scoring in these events, the more guys you have on the floor, the more points you can accumulate.
David Gradeless: 0-2
William Pendleton: 2-2
Ryan McOwen: 1-2
Trent Jones: 0-2
Wesley Mitchum: 0-2
Jonathan Zafra: 4-0 = 1st place
We are continuing to get better each day. Our take-down and near-fall numbers are increasing, which means the practices are accomplishing our goals.
Our numbers are low this year as the attrition rate is over 50%. Wrestling takes commitment by the athlete and the parents. It is a huge sacrifice physically, especially since the sport has two major holidays involved. I am proud of the work the remaining wrestlers have put in. Hard work shows at the end of the year. In this sport you can only become a champion is you put in the work required to do so. You get out of this sport exactly what you put in. Plain and simple.”
Jonathan Zafra: 1st place in 195lb weight class
