Coach Metzinger’s comments on the meets:
“I am proud of how hard they guys that were present worked in practice, and the progress they are making on the wrestling mat. Sam, David, Ryan, Trent, Wesley, and Jonathan showed their dedication to the sport by coming to practice and attending the meets. To be the best you cannot take two weeks off from the sport just because its a break from school. Signing up and committing to a team means you intend to come to every practice and every event, not just the ones that are convenient. This is High School and not Rec-League. One day there will be enough competition where all of these “vacationers” will lose their spots.
Team scores and records are deceiving. This team is getting better and we are competing even though the team scores are not showing it. At the Pilkington Duals Manteo won more wrestled matches than they lost in every meet except one. Team scores looked bad because of forfeits. At the duals we went 12-8 on the matches wrestled.
At the Falcon Invitational we competed well. Jonathan Zafra won his second tournament of the year in the 195lb weight class.
The guys are putting in a lot of hard work on the mat. The sport of wrestling will make a man out of you, forces you to be mentally tough, and you have to learn how to accept defeat. Unfortunately for this year’s team about 15 guys are no longer on the squad (either quitting or violation of team rules). Sometimes you have to thin down the roster, preach discipline, and really push the guys that are willing to stick it out. Our season is not over, and our guys are getting better every day. I am excited to see how many conference champions and state qualifiers there will be!”
