Thomas Hensley hired as Assistant Wrestling Coach at Manteo High.

Coach Hensley comes to Manteo after 6 years of coaching at R-S Central High School in Rutherfordton, NC. He was mentored by future Hall of Fame coach, Rich Cox, and by current Hall of Fame coach, Norm Osteen of Strong and Courageous Wrestling Club. During his time at R-S, he helped lead a team from 73rd in the state in 2013 to eventually finishing as high as 3rd in 2017. He was apart of teams that finished in the top 10 in the state 5 consecutive years in a row from 2015 to 2019 (6th, 6th, 3rd, 10th, and 5th). He assisted Rich Cox in coaching 6 state champion wrestlers (Austin Neal 2x, Kaleb Hines, Kanaan Brock, Caleb Spears, and Zachariah Lewis). Coach Hensley was also able to assist in coaching two NHSCA All-Americans: Austin Neal took 2nd in the country at Senior 113 in 2016, and Loki Ryan took 7th at Senior 113 in 2019. Alongside those state champions and All-Americans, Coach Hensley helped coach 4 state runner-ups, 5 additional state placers, and 11 state qualifiers. Coach Hensley has been able to help mentor 4 college wrestlers while at R-S; Caleb Spears (Presbyterian), Ramon Rodriguez (Appalachian State), Austin Neal (Newberry), and Loki Ryan (SMC). 

Coach Hensley graduated Cum Laude from Appalachian State University with an English; Secondary Education degree. He will be teaching English this coming year, and looks forward to the opportunity. His favorite part about wrestling is building relationships with kids, parents, coaches, and administration. He also loves to travel the country attending tournaments, camps, and clinics. He looks forward to being heavily involved with youth wrestling and club wrestling at Manteo.
